Penny graduated with a BA Hons from Liverpool University in 1999 and received a post graduate certificate in teaching,
with a certificate in string teaching from
the Royal Northern College of Music in 2001.
Penny, also taught by mother, started learning the violin aged 4.
When forming the Spring Quartet in 1995,
Penny took up viola to accommodate the quartet.
Penny led and played solos with Manchester Symphony Orchestra with whom she also played solo violin in Rimski-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnole and Saint-Saëns’ Danse Macabre.
